Description
The project will enable the participating SLP boroughs of Kingston and Sutton to gain real time insight into how known flood hotspots are coping and whether they are able to accommodate additional rainfall / runoff or are interventions required to prevent the risk of flooding occuring. The project will use IoT technology to obtain new data insights via internet-connected culvert / soakaway sensors to support the making of informed decisions that may prevent flooding from occurring, avoiding the disruption this brings with it to residents, businesses and the cost to the economy. The project will bring together technology and places to create spaces that address the challenges faced by our communities and provide opportunities to help people have better, healthier lives and live independently for longer. Sutton and Kingston as well as other SLP partners have suffered from major surface water flooding in various locations that has resulted in our major road networks being affected. Due to surface water flooding we have had to close roads and put in local diversions which has a knock on effect to adjacent areas. The purpose of this trial will be to verify that IoT sensors deployed in the known problem areas can identify the risk of flooding thus allowing proactive action to be taken to prevent flooding from occurring. The data collected will be used to generate alerts to assist with proactive management and in parallel to feed into future forecasting in order to see if different water management solutions are required. As the data is non-person specific, there is no risk of capturing personally identifiable information with this Use Case. The underlying platform should be linked to a single or multiple weather station installed within the borough (bidders to determine). The purpose is to ensure that useful insights can be gained i.e. soakaway is at 80% but rain has stopped or soakaway is at 80% but it's forecast to rain for a further 12hrs and is actually raining. The action taken in these two instances could be very different. Bidders shall ensure weather stations are self maintaining and have no Council involvement.
