Description

The Cornwall Healthy Weight Strategy 2018-2022 outlines that there should be support for adults to lose weight. In previous years this has been delivered by Healthy Cornwall through their Healthy Adults Programme. However, this was attended predominantly by women and older adults. The new Healthy Cornwall model is aimed at tackling inequalities. In regard to healthy weight, men are more likely to be overweight or obese compared to women and adults living in the most deprived areas are more likely to be overweight or obese compared to those living in the least deprived areas . Recent evidence also highlights that there is an inequality in men accessing healthy weight programmes. This study also found that typical weight management interventions tend to favour females and older participants. This has been reflected locally whereby the take up for free Slimming World vouchers has been 96% female and previous Healthy Adults courses had a 75% / 25% split in women and men respectively. Evidence also highlights that, interventions with a behavioural component for men that report weight as an outcome tended not to report socioeconomic factors and few were specifically designed for men from lower socioeconomic groups. Healthy Cornwall is seeking to purchase provision of a football based healthy weight programme for men.
