Legal Justification
High power Radio Frequency tubes (valves) used in the ISIS Linear Accelerator are considered consumable items because their expected lifetimes are limited, often of the order of 10,000 hours or less (Approximately 2 years scheduled running). It should be noted that these tubes have for many years only been available to UKRI through a single source. The specialised nature of these devices, and the very limited world-wide demand, means it is not viable for any other potential manufacturer to tool up as a second source. Successful development of a 4616 equivalent would require agreement with Photonis (so that detailed manufacturing & engineering drawings could be shared) otherwise infringement of copyright laws could result.
