Total Quantity or Scope
The purpose of colposcopy is the prevention of cervical cancer through the early detection and treatment of precancerous lesions (CIN). The colposcopy service in Northern Ireland provides care for women with abnormal cervical smears and related conditions. Colposcopy is critical in the prevention of cervical cancer for women at risk. A computerised colposcopy system was implemented in all Trusts in December 2013 to meet the recommendations of the Northern Ireland Audit Office report. Currently there are 12 Colposcopy Clinics throughout Northern Ireland within the 5 Trusts using the Excelicare Colposcopy Information System to ensure Quality Assurance of the colposcopy element of the Northern Ireland Cervical Screening Programme. The delivery of the Regional Computerised Colposcopy System for cervical screening allows the Northern Ireland colposcopy service to be quality assured, meet the requirements of clinical governance and assess the performance and workloads of colposcopy clinics. The system also standardises the collection of data and ensures that data collected from each of the NI colposcopy clinics is used to provide NHS Cervical Screening Programme minimum data requirements to enable the completion of the KC65 return. Data extracted from the Regional Computerised Colposcopy Information System allows consultants to produce recertification audit documentation required for submission to the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP). Data is also provided from the system to support the regional audit of invasive cervical cancer and support documentation is provided to facilitate multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
