Description

A consortium of 6 energy and data providers have come together to overcome data barriers to the net zero transition. The Phase 2 project will explore the feasibility of creating a smart meter data repository which maintains user control of personal data and the strict privacy protections of the Data Access and Privacy Framework. This data repository could help lower electricity bills and speed up rollouts of low-carbon technologies such as electric vehicle chargers and low carbon heating systems and identify issues such as fuel poverty, power outages and future constraints on the electricity distribution network. The project's approach puts privacy in the foreground, exploring new tools and techniques to protect personal data while sharing anonymised trends and insights to help manage our energy system more efficiently and accelerate the transition to net zero. Advanced Infrastructure builds software tools for power network operators and local authorities to support energy planning and decision making. They are partnered with Perse Technology Limited, who provide data services for the energy and carbon markets. Project partner Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), a distribution network operator powering over 3 million homes will co-create the solution alongside Data Communications Company (DCC), which operates Great Britain's smart meter communications network. N3rgy will provide technology to test the provision of secure and scalable access to smart energy data, while the Retail Energy Code Company will provide expertise aligned with their goal to make the retail energy market efficient, economical, and able to deliver positive consumer outcomes. The technical solution uses machine learning research co-developed by the University of Sheffield and Advanced Infrastructure to leverage the power of aggregated smart meter data in reducing the cost of heating and powering our homes.
