Description

Northern Gas Operates 37,000km of gas pipe and is responsible for distribution of gas to homes and businesses across the North of England, an area covering West, East & North Yorkshire, the North East and Northern Cumbria. 1190km of the network is High Pressure (HP >7 bar) Local Transmission System (LTS) which to comply with the Pipeline Safety Regs (PSR 1996) and IGEM/TD/1 Ed. 6 must be surveyed every 2 weeks in order to report on any activities or changes in and around the pipelines. NGN has an obligation to fully survey its LTS pipelines, to identify building encroachments, ground movement, activities, or potential activities by third parties in close proximity to a pipeline or specific main. A key requirement of the survey is to ensure that third parties do not damage, interfere or cause an escape of pressurised gas from NGN's asset. Aerial surveillance is an established and effective method of surveying long lengths of buried pipelines to identify threats. Aerial Surveillance is deemed as an essential safety related service for NGN.
